The Team

Maria Elena Tejeda – Founder

Maria’s passion for childcare started early, inspired by her own experiences caring for young children. She has always believed that children are not ‘difficult’—it’s us, the adults, who need to better understand their needs. This philosophy has guided her work in early childhood education, where she has focused on creating a safe, engaging, and supportive environment for every child. With extensive training in early childhood development, curriculum planning, and nutrition, Maria ensures that Sunshine Academy fosters independence, curiosity, and lifelong learning. Over the years, she pursued extensive training in early childhood education and child development, earning certifications in curriculum planning, nutrition, and leadership.

Her philosophy is simple: Children thrive when they feel safe, loved, and free to explore the world around them. At Sunshine Academy, she brings this belief to life, ensuring that every child receives personalized attention, a high-quality education, and the care they deserve.

Susan Badillo – Academy Director

Susan Badillo brings a lifetime of love and dedication to child development, particularly in supporting children with special needs. As a mother of three and a devoted aunt, Susan has always been the one who steps up—not just to nurture but to guide, teach, and help children build habits and independence.

Her upbringing shaped her deep sense of compassion. Her stepmother, Sussie, could not have children of her own, so Susan’s father and stepmother chose to adopt, welcoming children with special needs into their home. Her adopted sister, Katie, became the reason Susan developed such a natural ability to connect with children who need extra patience, love, and understanding.

Throughout her career, Susan has always been the one trusted to work with the so-called ‘difficult’ kids—not because they were actually difficult, but because she had the gift of seeing beyond behavior to truly understand what they needed. She believes, just as Maria does, that children are not unmanageable or ‘bad’—it is up to us as adults to listen, learn, and meet them where they are.

At Sunshine Academy, Susan’s leadership ensures that every child receives not just care, but guidance, encouragement, and the opportunity to grow into their full potential. She and Maria share a deep passion for child education, often having long conversations just for fun about how to better support children’s growth. Their shared philosophy makes them the perfect team to lead Sunshine Academy.
